One of the projects we are currently working on is

One of the projects we are currently working on is the reissue of a book called 'Paper Tearing', which is the second part of the 'Educational Handwork' series by Henry G Paterson. The first part of which is the popular 'Paper Folding' book that was used by Charlotte Mason as the starting point for students of Sloyd. (We recently released our new colour edition of this popular resource and it is currently available for sale on our website.)Paper Tearing was never assigned by Charlotte Mason so far as we know but since working through the book we have found it to be the perfect bridge between Paper Folding, commonly recommended for students in Form 1B, and Paper Modelling, which is usually assigned in 1A. Many parents have noted that Paper Modelling can feel like quite a step up from Paper Folding and so Paper Tearing appears to fill the gap perfectly, providing a firm foundation for students of Paper Sloyd.We are very excited about this new project and wanted to share a little progress report with you all, as well as show a bit of its history.The original owner of the book we have in our posession was a man called G. Stevenson. He clearly thought a lot about the projects in the book and made copious amounts of notes in the back of the book. Some of our pictures show just dedicated he was to fully understanding each project before perhaps sharing them with his students.Paper Tearing is an exciting discovery of a book we didn't know excisted until recently, and we are thoroughly enjoying working through the book and making all of the models. Work is progressing steadily and we estimate a release date for early 2025.

Like so many of my friends in this space, I desire for my children to grow up with a love and appetite for that which is worthy, true, beautiful, and good...And like so many of my fellow CM mamas in the trenches, I often feel inadequate and ill equipped for such a lofty task. Living in a culture where beauty and truth isn't exactly celebrated, sometimes we find our mama hearts crying out, "Where do I even begin?"But amidst all the uncertainty, fear, and loneliness, there is One who hears us and is ready and willing to answer our call.So start there. Start with Him. The author of Truth Himself. The creator of all that is good, of all that is beautiful.Yes, let us expose our children to beautiful poetry, inspiring literature, and sensational artwork and music, but at the heart of it all must be God Himself. To appreciate creation without acknowledging the Creator is to completely miss the point. We must point our children to Christ, to the Cross, to the beauty of His love for us.That's where it starts. And that's also where it ends. Tonight we finished this gem in the history of American literature and it has sent us down a rabbit hole of American folk songs. What could be more fun than spending the evening singing (or yelling, more like) patriotic American songs after reading such an amazing book I couldn't tell you 😀I have to say that up to now this had been my favourite of the Little House books. I can't wait to start By the Shores of Silver Lake.Which is your favourite?

Who here utilises a morning basket or morning time?Up until recently, I always tried to spread the feast out in a similar way to how Miss Mason did it. Bible and maths first, with the riches scattered amongst the other subjects, allowing for an interesting and varied day of learning, always keeping us on our toes.For a long time, it worked well, but as with all things, seasons change and needs change, and we must adapt our routines and systems along with it.As our lives face various challenges and new responsibilities, and the busyness of our afternoons only seems to increase, for some time, I've noticed I've heavily veered towards focusing on getting all the so-called "academic" subjects done often to the detriment of many of the subjects that bring life to our learning.In response to this, I've switched to block scheduling for a while, and our morning block is now reserved for our morning basket. A basket full of books and poems, Scripture, songs, and Shakespeare, and a sofa full of love, family, and the sharing of ideas. This ensures that what we get done first is the most important parts of our day because I do believe these are not merely the riches of our education. Today we went on an 8 mile bike ride. It was unplanned and we just figured we'd see how we got on...The children did amazingly well but my 7 year old started to lag towards the end so I suggested we sing some songs as we went.He liked the idea but wanted to recite poetry instead, so we spent the rest of the ride shouting some of our favourite poems out at the top of our lungs. We started with Duck's Ditty by Kenneth Grahame, followed by Block City, From a Railway Carriage, and A Good Play, all by Robert Louis Stevenson. He then proceeded to make up his own poem called 'Autumn'.It's moments like these when I see the beauty of our education come alive.❤️❤️❤️Share some of your favourite moments like these in the comments below

🌼 Let's talk living books 🌼Living books are books filled with living ideas. Ideas that delight, challenge, inspire, and grow upon the mind. Whether the receiver recognises them or not the ideas themselves exist and given the right circumstances will work wonders in the mind of a reader, leading them on journeys into far-off lands and close-to-home truths, making connections with knowledge and experience old and new.They are also filled with living truths. Truths about human nature, spiritual realities, and ones own lived experiences.Living books span all genres, all lengths, and all types of books. Whether old, new, funny, sad, true, nonsensical, and everything in between, they have the power to awaken senses in us that we didn't even know existed. Typically well written they paint pictures for us through a well crafted narrative which can ignite a flame of inquiry inside of us and thereby capture our imagination. They teach us truths about the world and who we are as human beings; they lead us to experience worlds apart from our own.They give us life beyond the air we breathe.Just yesterday, I was talking to my son about how sin often comes to us in the guise of something alluring. It doesn't seem bad. It seems enticing. It comes to us in the form of something we want. I thought this was a complex subject to be talking to him about and I was trying to find the right words to explain it when he suddenly became really animated and excitedly told me how it was like the witch that led George away in The Questing Knights of the Faerie Queene. It was my birthday last week (the big 4-0!) but unfortunately I was very unwell and was unable to celebrate in any meaningful way.But my husband's thoughtful gift more than makes up for the lack of festivities, with this gorgeous first edition of Charlotte Mason's sixth volume.It is truly a beauty to behold, and a beauty to literally hold, and the very feel of its leaves makes me giddy..
