The way we structure our mornings has become a def The way we structure our mornings has become a defining part of our homeschool, but it wasn't always this way.Once upon a time, I was a relatively new mum with a toddler under my legs and a baby on my hip, often feeling overwhelmed by it all. Mornings were unorganised, stressful, and often chaotic, and any visions of a rich and peaceful morning time seemed far beyond reach. And then, one day, I read a poem over breakfast. It wasn't groundbreaking. The baby didn't stop crying. The toddler didn't stop wriggling. No one held onto my every word. But it was a start.A lot has happened in the years between those days of early motherhood and now, but one thing has remained constant ever since, and it all started with a poem. The way we start our mornings really does define our homeschool. It's the time when no matter what else we have going on that day, we still gather together every morning to pray together, read together, and sing together. It's an extension of the Early Years when formal lessons still seemed so far away because it brought us joy then, and it brings us joy now.And it all started with a poem. Our mornings have evolved time and time again with each new season. We've added to it, and taken away from it, we've lengthened it and shortened it. But it still defines us. It sets us up for the day and reminds us that we're family and that throughout it all, we have each other.Today, our morning time consists of lots of music, prayer, Scripture, read alouds, and poetry. Some people might not think the children's education has really begun until we get to the nitty gritty of subjects like maths and English, but I disagree.
It began a long time ago. It began with a poem.I once had visions of a rich and peaceful morning time... well, one of those has come true, can you guess which? And the other? Well, let me tell you, a home filled with joy, laughter, and enquiring minds is well worth the cost.Do you have a morning time routine? Through several years of trial and error, I think Through several years of trial and error, I think I've finally discovered the secret sauce that makes our homeschool run smoothly, and this is it.It all starts with the schedule.By "schedule" I don't just mean the timetable, but rather, I'm referring to the bigger picture of how I structure my days--my rhythm, so to speak.Having a solid understanding of where my priorities lie on any particular day, how much time I have at my disposal in the afternoons, what outside commitments I need to keep, and what household responsibilities I need to account for, is so important when it comes to planning our homeschool work and what I want to accomplish in a given term (too much changes for me to want to plan for a whole year - we go term by term here). Each day comes with its own commitments and activities whether it be seeing friends, visiting elderly grandparents, tutoring or therapy sessions, or choir practice, etc, and so, by structuring our days so that I understand what we will be doing, it helps me to not feel guilty and overwhelmed by it all, and also, to know what is reasonable of me to expect us to achieve in lessons. We can't do it all. I wish we could, but we can't (ask me how I know). There needs to be a certain amount of give and take. This half term we've had to jig things about once again to accommodate sessions with a reading tutor for a dyslexic student, and visits with a grandparent who has dementia and we are in the process of placing in a specialist care home. Neither of these new commitments are how we might want to spend our precious time, but they are important, and they are priorities. The schedule helps me account for this long before I try to oversubscribe our days with a multitude of lessons and activities, which will inevitably leave me feeling overwhelmed and a complete and utter failure.Tell me, do you have a secret recipe for planning your homeschool? For more on planning in your homeschool, see@arrowsforchrist

The days are still chilly, but oh, they are gettin The days are still chilly, but oh, they are getting longer, the sun is showing his face, and new life is in the air. That can only mean one thing!Spring is on its way! After hibernating for so much of the winter, we took our new driving pony out for his big debut today. We only acquired the cart yesterday, and it certainly has a history. Our summer project will be cleaning it up and getting it into tip-top shape.I find my children really excell at outdoor jobs and projects. Do you have any big outdoor projects planned for the coming months?.

I love Miss Mason's method of education, and it ha I love Miss Mason's method of education, and it has been such a good fit for both of my children, even though they have quite different needs. One of my children struggles quite a bit more than the other academically, and so I've had to figure out what her individual needs are and adapt the way we approach our lessons in several ways. These are just a few:🌼 A Fun StartThere was a time when I tried to start the day with maths but more often than not this would cause tears and frustration before the day had even begun. Now, we start the day with music and lots of laughter. What a gamechanger! Starting lessons has never been so easy - or so fun!🌼 GamesWe play games and lots of them. My daughter learns way more from a game than she does by almost any other method. It is truly a blessing to be able to support her learning in this way.🌼 Visual guides and picturesYou may not know this, but the reason I originally started creating my Picture Book Companions was because my daughter needed something visual to latch onto during lessons. Little did I know that so many other people would find these guides helpful, too.🌼 DrawingSimilarly, drawing has been a huge help to my daughter, enabling her to better assimilate the information from our lessons.🌼 Timetable ManagementAlthough I am in charge of what lessons we learn and the resources we use, I often let my children set the timetable for the day. My children absolutely love having control over the timetable (I do have guidelines they need to adhere to, though, so that we dont have all the same kinds of subjects too close together). We use Charlotte Mason Beehive's Timetable Magnets to organise the schedule each day.***Well, these are just a few ways that I've found help my struggling student with her studies, but I'm always willing to learn more and adapt as and when new challenges arise. How have you helped your students with their individual challenges. Please share. It may just be what another mama needs to hear. For more on meeting the needs of a struggling student for @charlottemasonmondays see what my friends are saying@simple.and.free_

I just love picture books that are made up of pass I just love picture books that are made up of passages from Scripture, and I think this is a perfect one to bring out today.Amidst all the messages of love, the history and stories of Valentine's Day, and the heartfelt gifts we present to our friends and family on a day such as this, may we not forget to focus on what love truly is and from whom it originates. Our limited, human experience and understanding of love can not compare to the love God has for us."For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life." John 3:16 (KJV)"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." (ESV)Do you have a favourite picture book that demonstrates God's love for us?

Don't mind me...I'm just sitting here, posing fo Don't mind me...I'm just sitting here, posing for Instagram, all dressed up in a pretty Edwardian gown, pretending as though it's the most natural thing in the world...... Well, now, we've got the awkward introduction out of the way, and you now know it's totally, completely, absolutely normal for me (I dress like this all the time, honest! 😆) I did kind of want to share some books with you. Here are some vintage nature readers that Charlotte Mason assigned to Form I students in her programmes. Which ones do you know?🌼 Tommy Smith at the Zoo is the second instalment in a series about a little boy called Tommy Smith who is able to communicate with animals. My children absolutely love these books and at Charlotte Mason Beehive, we sell a slightly updated edition of Tommy Smith's Animals, the first in the series, as well as a picture book companion to accompany it. The digital versions of both books are also available as free downloads.🌼 Animals Life in the East is a wonderful book by F. Martin Duncan, and is part of a series called Wonders of Animal Life. These books were often listed as an alternative option if the teacher did not wish to use the Tommy Smith books or couldn't for some reason.🌼 I'm sure this one needs no introduction. Arabella Buckley's Eyes and No Eyes series was used consistently by Miss Mason in Form I. The books are relatively short and would usually be read over one or two terms, depending on their length. At Charlotte Mason Beehive, we sell slightly updated versions of some of these books, along with picture book companions to go alongside them.🌼 A Nature Study Guide by W. S. Furneaux was consistently suggested in the programmes for special studies or for reference. It was mainly to be used by the teacher, in much the same way as The Handbook of Nature Study is used by Charlotte Mason educators today.🌼 The Changing Year by Florence Haines, which was also assigned for special studies. This charming book takes the reader on a journey through the months of the year. @Charlottemasonpoetry has a transcription and audio reading of this book available on their website.Have you used any of these in your homeschool?

I don't talk about the man who has my heart much o I don't talk about the man who has my heart much on here, but for @charlottemasonmondays today, we're exploring the topic of Valentine's Day, and so I figure the time is right to celebrate the one who provides for us, loves us, and makes our lives what they are.Behind every post you see, whether it be of me, the children, our homeschool, our business, or the hustle and bustle of our every day lives, there is another figure without whom none of this could be.My husband may not feature much on here much, but his mark is felt throughout it all. Not only does he work hard to provide for us, but he is a fierce supporter of both our homeschool and our small business. He plays with the children, makes them laugh, and teaches them skills like how to build a rope swing or fish in a river. He cooks the dinners so that our afternoons can be spent with friends or playing outside. He designs all the material for Charlotte Mason Beehive, sometimes waking up super early to bring our vision to life. He's not one for big romantic gestures, but he loves us, and he shows us through all the little things. Day in and day out. He's our hero, and it's time we let the world know. Now, it's your turn. Tell me about the special guy in your life and why he's awesome. To see what my friends are reflecting on this Valentine's Day, please also see@juiceboxhomeschool

Saturdays in the North household are never dull. Saturdays in the North household are never dull.It is a school day for us (mainly because my husband is at work that day and we have Tuesday off instead), but it is without a doubt my favourite day to "do school."It's just a slower day. There is a stillness and tranquility about it.Which you'd think was strange if you could see inside our home because what goes on inside these four walls is anything but tranquil...But we have fewer commitments (or none at all usually), so I don't feel any pressure to get things done before a certain time.
There is more time to explore the subjects and occupations we love most. Art, science, music, nature walks, and just good ol' family bonding...Saturday does it best.I've also been sharing quite a bit of our school day to my stories today, so if you want to see what we got up to today, check them out. What's your favourite day of the week? What do you love about it?
